Monday, November 18th, 2013 3:06:03 by Ahmad MehdiAccording to a new UN report, operations this year saw around 12,000 Afghan Taliban fighters being killed, wounded or captured.
The US and Nato troops, who have been fighting in Afghanistan for over 10 years now will be withdrawn at end of next year.
The UN Security Council is concerned over the efficacy of Afghan authorities who will have to deal with the insurgents once the Nato and US forces are extracted. According to a report the insurgents have been using advanced homemade bombs and Afghanistan’s mining industry is a cause for concern, given its use of heavy explosives.
Tribal elders in Afghanistan have a meeting on the coming Thursday to determine the future of the country after 2014. The report also revealed that violence in the country has increased manifold, reaching the levels reported in 2010. However, it also stated that the Taliban have failed to gain mass support or success despite increased activity.
“Losses on the insurgent side are difficult to estimate, but government sources and Taliban internal statistics alike estimate them at between 10,000 and 12,000,” said the report.
