Addressing a question at the Centre for American Progress, Secretary of State, Hillary Clinton told that United States wants Pakistan to be a part of the solution in Afghanistan.
These comments came in at a time when the tensions between U.S and Pakistan are on it’s peak after Washington blamed ISI openly for supporting the militants that attacked U.S embassy in Kabul a month ago. However, Islamabad forcefully denied the claims made by U.S and said it’ll hurt the efforts which were made in this war on terror.
The Secretary also told that U.S is also forcing Pakistan on a ‘range of issues’ on which it will be held responsible. Hillary Clinton made these comments after giving a lecture on American Global Leadership on Wednesday.
Clinton said, “Pakistan has to be part of the solution or they will continue to be part of the problem. And, therefore, as frustrating as it is, we just keep everyday going at it and I think we make very slow, sometimes barely discernible progress, but we’re moving in the right direction.”
Having said that, the secretary of the state also said that U.S cannot close it’s door on Pakistan, despite the fact that “This is a very difficult relationship but I believe strongly it is not one we can walk away from and expect that anything will turn out better.”
Recognizing the importance of Pakistan in the region secretary of the state said that U.S has no choice in this regard but to work with Pakistan in order to even out the situation in Afghanistan because according to her Pakistan has big ante in the final outcome of their neighbouring country “and they are going to be involved one way or the other.”
She also added that U.S will continue to push Pakistan so we could get answers on different issues that we have laid for them. Therefore U.S is intensely involve in exploring ways how to improve it’s collaboration with the Pakistan that’ll help Afghan wish for a rightful peace and settlement process.
The rift between the two allies started, when both countries brought the argument in public after the ex-chairman of the U.S Joint Chiefs of Staff Admiral Mike Mullen told Congress that he believe that one of the militant group Haqqani network, is a ‘veritable arm’ of the Pakistani agency ISI.
Apart from U.S ties with Pakistan, Hillary Clinton also admitted the teething troubles that they will face, once the Nato forces will leave Afghanistan in 2014. On the other hand, Afghans are looking settlement with the militant groups and appearance of a normal life in their country after three decades of domestic problems and wars.
The secretary of defence also told that U.S has always supported Afghan leadership and a settlement process that is led by Afghanis and after long consideration by the President of Afghanistan Hamid Karzai, the two administrations agreed to brought some of the Talibans and related rebellious groups to the peace table.
At the same time, Hillary Clinton also mentioned about President Barrack Obama’s policy regarding Afghanistan, which they’ll keep following along with the table talks. As per this policy the forces will try to kill as many militants including Taliban in order to make the region safe by taking these insurgents off the battle field.
