Pakistan’s legendary rock band, Junoon, which has touched mammoth heights during their lasting stint on the country’s mainstream music, is about to commemorate their 20th anniversary since the formation in 1991.
However, in the commemoration of the band’s centenary, Pakistan’s youth and upcoming musicians will have the honour to be part of the group’s 20th anniversary album where they will have a chance to pay tribute to the band for being the pioneers of ‘Sufi Rock’ music in Pakistan.
The album is yet to be released but comes as a potent platform for the country’s growing bands, including Laal, and Aag followed by solo artists, Bilal Khan, Uzair Sultan and the nation’s youngest guitar maestro, Usman Riaz, and many more.
It was also learnt that the initiative will include some of Junoon’s mega hits such as Mitti which will be covered by Aag, and Saeen, that will be portrayed in an instrumental cover featuring local instruments, all harmonised with the young Usman Raiz’s imposing command over music.
For every contributor the opportunity comes as a great honour, especially for representing one of the greatest rock bands the nation has ever seen.
“This literally means everything to me. I spent my childhood trying to emulate Ali Azmat’s vocal range and it was Brian O’ Connell who inspired me to learn bassline, so this is like a dream come true,” said Haroon Sheikh from Aag, a rising underground band which is still to make its appearance on the mainstream.
“To let these young artists use the platform is a big deal, because I have seen artists who refuse to share power and try to put a damper on upcoming talent,” said Sheikh, who was told by Ahmad via email that he has heard Aag the band and thinks that they have the passion to represent Junoon.
On the other hand, for the 20 year old Usman, who was also reach by Salman Ahmad through an email, said that it was honour for him to represent an international brand under the banner of Junoon.
“Here is an established musician who feels I’m good enough. I’m not really concerned about fame or recognition but being allowed to recreate Junoon’s music is what I’m grateful for,” said Riaz.
