Beaconhouse Model United Nations is scheduled to be conducted in November of this year in the Beaconhouse School System Margalla Campus. The event is going to feature different private schools that will send their delegations to take part in the activity that simulates the United Nations.
The students from the participating schools will be playing the roles of diplomats from the countries or an NGO assigned to them. As delegates, they will be sitting in various committees of the United Nations, such as the Security Council or the General Assembly. Each committee will be headed by a chair, which will be an experienced Model United Nations student from the host team.
Before the students come to the Campus for the three day event, they will have to equip themselves with information that would enable them to speak up and make points in the committee sessions in order to state their stance and pass a favourable resolution. This will be done in the form of a position paper that deals with the position of a country over a specific issue. For this purpose, the students conduct background research on the given issue, investigate the involvement of the United Nations in the matter and come up with alternate solutions.
The three day event includes other activities that will highlight different talents of the students. The first day will feature the committee sessions while the second day will hold a Global Village in which delegates from their respective countries will be representing their culture in the form of traditional dresses as well as pottery, tools, musical instruments etcetera. This helps to inculcate a sense of understanding as well as acceptance of other cultures and their people. It also makes the students appreciate the similarities between their native culture and the one that they represent at the Global Village. The event is going to come to its closure with a grand dinner on the last day.
Model United Nations is readily being taken up by educational institutions all across the world both at the university as well as the school level. The activity proves to be a nourishing and vigorous exercise that generates awareness and deepens the understanding of students about current affairs, contemporary international relations, diplomatic discourse as well as the agenda of the United Nations.
The origins of this academic activity can be traced as far back as the early 1920s where Americans college students did simulations of the League of Nations. Later on, the format was taken up by Harvard University in the form of the Harvard National Model United Nations. The largest Model United Nations Conference that has been held to date was the THIMUN in which more than 4,200 students took part.
