Subway- Best Sandwiches in Town
Wednesday, October 19th, 2011 3:23:37 by Farhan KhalidFirst time I heard the name “Subway” was way back in 1999 and surprisingly in a city which is considered by many as a catabolic city resistant to any sort of modernization- Peshawar.
Naturally, it failed there because people of Peshawar who are used to ‘Chapli Kababs’ and ‘Tikka Karahi’ found it bit less filling to their liking and within a span of a year, it was shut down.
However, in other cities, after surviving the early years of dormancy, Subway gradually emerged as one of the best sandwiches shops in the country.
Subway is referred to as “Fresh, Diet or Healthy” food probably because of the use of fresh vegetables and non-fried meat in making of the regular sandwich. The first time, I ever tasted their sandwich, I just couldn’t figure out what it was because it is totally different from the junk we are used to eating in Pakistan.
It took me two years to develop my taste and when I did, there was just no stopping . A time came when I would only eat Subway in lunch and dinner for two-three consecutive months.
What happened with me bechanced with most of the people in Pakistan for sure because Subway is addictive. Their Sandwiches are unlike the normal sandwiches and this is what makes them distinct.
Their recipe is simple yet intriguing. The aroma that is produced as a result of mixing fresh vegetables with mustard, garlic and tobasco sauce is just heavenly.
Subway has a fascinating history too. It was established in 1965, by 17 years old Fred Deluca with a with a purpose to gather enough funds from the shop in order fulfill his dream of studying medicine which seemed to be his obsession at that time. Somehow he managed a loan of $1,000 and started the shop.
I am sure he would have never imagined that his brainchild would emerge as something that would change the landscape of the food industry.
Subway has two branches in Islamabad currently. One in Blue Area and the other one recently opened in F 11 Markaz. Few years back, if you would land to Subway, you would find it almost vacant with two or three tables occupied at the maximum but in last five years, its fame has skyrocketed in the capital city and no matter what time you visit it, it is hard to find a table.
Today, Subway is the world’s biggest sandwich chain with more than 34,000 outlets around the globe. In Pakistan alone, they have around 30 outlets which just concretes the fact how much everyone adores it.
Despite the fact KFC, McDonalds and Hardees allure people more, still Subway is not an alien anymore and with time, more and more people are turning towards it. I wouldn’t be surprised if they start home deliveries in future.
Those of you who have not tried it yet, should definitely try it not once but more than that.
