As, the old elected members of the non-permanent seat in the United Nations Security Council will end their term on December 31, 2011, the new candidates the making serious efforts in securing the seat for the next two years.
The potential candidates for non-permanent seat in UN Security Council include India and Pakistan and both are finding support from in order to seize the seat. However, the Indian hopes received a serious hit when China announced that they are gravely considering supporting Pakistan for the popular place.
This statement came from the Chinese Foreign Minister on Wednesday. The Chinese Foreign Minister’s spokeswoman Jiang Yu said that China gives immense significance to Pakistan’s request for securing the non-permanent seat in UN Security Council. She also said that Beijing believes that Pakistan should play a bigger role in upholding international peace and security. Addressing the press briefing, Jiang noted that, “China and Pakistan are all-weather strategic partners,” Jiang noted at a news briefing.
With this statement, Pakistan’s case has become solid and now it may prove a graving obstacle for New Delhi, which was earlier hoping to secure the seat with ease.
Pakistan had welcomed this announcement from China, as Pakistani Ambassador Masood Khan said that Pakistan is thankful to China for it’s backing and public support of Pakistan’s application for the non-permanent seat of the UN Security Council.
He also said, “This is a rare and precious gesture. We value and cherish it. This shows the depth of our relationship and mutual trust between the two countries,” he said, adding: We thank China for its good wishes towards Pakistan. Upon election, we look forward to working towards regional and international peace and security in collaboration with China.”
The UN General Assembly will meet on Friday in order to choose by ballot next five non-permanent members of the Security Council. The next five non-permanent members will start serving from January 1, 2012 to December 2013.
Brazil, Gabon, Nigeria, Bosnia & Herzegovina and Lebanon will leave their seats to make way for the new members. Pakistan can face tough time from Kyrgyzstan, which is participating for the first time.
