INMOL organises a seminar on Breast Cancer awareness

According to a press release, the Institute of Nuclear Medicine and Oncology (INMOL) organised a seminar on breast cancer in collaboration with a renowned pharmaceutical company Sanofi Aventis, at Alhamra Hall, Lahore on Wednesday to spread awareness among youth of Pakistan.

Many female students from different institutes especially from University of Punjab, Apwa College, Lahore College, Home Economics College and Punjab College attended the seminar.

During the seminar, many cancer specialists spoke to the audience regarding the bitter reality of this life threatening disease. Consultant Oncologist and Director INMOL Dr Misbah Masood said that “Breast Cancer is most spreading cancer in Asia but Pakistan is highly risk area in the region.” She further said that” one patient of breast cancer is registered in every 2 minutes and one patient died in every 14 minutes in the world.”

Misbah Masood also said that INMOL is a highly competitive institute in cancer research and its mobile units are conducting free mammography to many deserving patients across rural area of the country.

Many other doctors including Consultant Surgeon Dr. Samina Khokar, Consultant Oncologist Dr. Amira Shami, Clinacal Oncologist Dr. Farukh Rashid, Consultant radiologist Dr. Rafia Shahzad and Dr. Muneeb Nasir also delivered their speeches on different topics of breast cancer and how to limit breast cancer probabilities in women.

Breast cancer is one of the fastest diseases among women that contain elevated 22.9% of all cancers. According to a 2008 survey, that shocked the world as breast cancer caused 458,503 deaths worldwide especially 13.7% deaths in women.

Pakistan is also one of those countries in the world which is immensely suffering from breast cancer. Over 90,000 breast cancer cases annually report in Pakistan and this number is still rising.

Though, government has huge responsibility to spread awareness regarding breast cancer, but us as a nation, also needs to step up and play our role and do whatever in our capacity to show solicitude about this spreading disease. It is pretty unfortunate that in Pakistan, we still consider a taboo especially for women to take care of their bodies who always afraid to talk about breast cancer.
