Pakistan and the United States have same interest in established Afghanistan but the both the countries will have to find to common grounds taking into account the political realities, said Pakistan’s ambassador to Washington, Hussain Haqqani.
While delivering a lecture at the University of California, Berkeley on Wednesday, he regarded the process of reconciliation in Afghanistan as a significant move.
“Afghanistan has its own history and its future could best be led and shaped by the people of Afghanistan,” he noted.
He further added America could get results that are more positive by supporting the reconciliatory policy in Afghanistan, particularly with the conservative religious elements. Haqqani expressed hope that Pakistan and the America would be able to form a joint strategy to form a stable Afghanistan that will also eradicate the concerns of Pakistan.
Talking about the US-Pakistan relationship, he made it clear that there are few differences in Pakistan and the USA, but both countries had not reached at a point where rejection is an answer to any discussion. According to Haqqani, the biggest challenge in US-Pakistan bilateral relation is handling of the two parallels narratives. Haqqani said both countries would have to reconsider their current “event-dictated” attitude.
While talking about the efforts of the Pakistani Government, the diplomat said the government wanted to eradicate the terrorism at a good time keeping in view the countries social and political order. Haqqani said Pakistan could not initiate military operations that can bring us back severe results without the achievement of our cause to eradicate the terror.
He said only consistent democratic system could make Pakistan able to cope with the internal and the external challenges. Pakistani nation would be able to meet the requirements of the modern society, if democracy continues un-derailed, remarked Hussain Haqqani.
Meanwhile, US secretary of State Hillary Clinton arrives Pakistan on Thursday to resolve the current tension between both the nations. Hillary Clinton will meet the Pakistani leaders, including President Asif Ali Zardari, Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani and Army Chief Ashfaq Pervaiz Kiani. Hillary, who was in Afghanistan on Wednesday, has taken this initiative at her own and the US media is portraying her visit as ‘a last effort’.
