Federal government to ensure gas provision to power and domestic sectors – Pakistan Oil and Gas update

Islamabad – News Pakistan has learnt from some highly placed sources that frustrating gas load shedding is likely to severely hit the people of Pakistan in winter as the country ifaces its worst energy crisis since its birth. Due to financial constraints, there has been very little or no exploration activities taking place in Pakistan, with gas shortages mounting with every passing year. Furthermore, the depleting natural gas reserves will also be resulting in power shortages and gas load shedding throughout the winter season.

It was further revealed that the federal government has made necessary arrangements to allocate gas to power sector on priority ibases n its new gas load management plan.  The new gas provision schedule is likely to be put on the table before the ECC of the cabinet.

The Petroleum Ministry of Pakistan is gearing up its efforts to allow power sector of the country to run its operation on gas. A spokesperson of Petroleum Ministry revealed that the current demand of power sector is about 800 mmcfd, where as volume of gas required by the fertilizer sector is around 300 mmcfd. However, as the demand increases in winter season, both sectors are likely to face a shortfall of about 4 bcfd, which could results in a turmoil.

With Dakni and other gas fields shut down for various technical reasons, the overall gas production is Pakistan is declining with every passing day. At present the gas produced in Pakistan is estimated to be at around 3.8 bcfd. The two main gas supplying companies, SNGPL and SSGCL are expected to face a shortfall of about 2 bcfd, sources explained.

It was further learnt from the sources that during winter season, the government has planned to supply gas to large consumers mainly power plants and fertilizers industries.

“If the incumbent government gives priority to power sector instead of fertilizer sector while allocating gas for the months of December, January and February then inflation and black marketing will play with the busiess and large number of fertilizers will be imported to meet the demands of the farmers of the country”, a source opined.
