Pakistan becomes non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council.

Pakistan has been selected as one of the non-permanent member of 15 member United Nation’s (UN) Security Council. Pakistan got 129 votes from the 193 member General Assembly, which will help them to remain the non-permanent member of the council for the year 2012 and 2013.
The countries from across the globe were contesting with each other for one of the five positions of the Security Council to replace the countries whose tenure will end on December 31, 2011.
The countries who will be completing their tenure on December 31 are Bosnia, Brazil, Lebanon, Nigeria and Gabon. Besides Pakistan, two other countries have won the non-permanent seat of the UN Security Council because of the voting on Friday, October 21 for the said positions.
Pakistan and Kyrgyzstan competed for the single seat for Asia-Pacific region in the Security Council. This is the seventh time Pakistan has been selected as the non-permanent member of the Security Council. Pakistan’s earlier terms on the Council were in 1952-53, 1968-69, 1976-77, 1983-84, 1993-94 and most recently in 2003-04.
Morocco has secured one of the two seats of the African region with 151 votes. Both Togo and Mauritania will undergo a voting for the second African seat in the UN Security Council. Guatemala will replace Brazil as they have secured the Latin American seat unopposed.
In addition to the Africa seat, General Assembly is still to decide the future of the one European seat. During the voting on the Friday, none of three participating countries failed to secure a minimum of two third votes, which are the required criteria to secure the seat for the respective nation.
Three European countries, which contested for the European region seat in the Security Council, are Azerbaijan, Slovenia and Hungary. Azerbaijan secured 74 votes; Slovenia secured 67 while Hungary secured just 52 votes.
The Security Council consists of the five permanent and 10 non-permanent members. The permanent members have the right to veto. The non-permanent members have to complete two-year tenure. Pakistan will start his seventh two-year term as the non-permanent member of the Security Council on January 1, 2012.
