Today, even in this 21st century, millions of people around the world are still living in repression, doing labour in fields and factories under pitiless conditions while their employers threaten them with brutality if they tried to flee.
These forced labour and horrifying working environments suggest human trafficking and modern-day slavery which currently is a billion-dollar industry around the globe.
To spread awareness about this thriving brutal industry, Oscar-nominated director Robert Bilheimer has spent over four years in-making of his powerful new documentary “Not My Life”.
“People do not recoil from this. They are angered by it and horrified by it. I think it’s genuinely possible that we can move the dime on this, that we can put this in the forefront of the public consciousness. That’s all you need,” Bilheimer said.
The documentary depicts the extraordinary and inspiring stories from survivors, anti traffickers, the atrocious practices of human traffickers and their grimy morals of exploitation from five different continents including India, South America, North America, Southeast Asia and Africa.
“Not My Life” has exposed many survivors, who now are working for the well being of other victims around the globe and spreading awareness regarding slavery, forced labour, street begging, garbage picking, sexual trafficking, child enslavement and abuse.
Bilheimer, who has nominated in the past for an Oscar for his anti-Apartheid “Cry of Reason” documentary, said that this is a high time for our society, along with government, anti-traffickers and law enforcement agencies to take control of the situation and put an end to this brutal practice that is affecting millions of people every year.
He added, “I think the ground is fertile, and I think “Not My Life” really does have an exceptional opportunity to push to that proverbial tipping point. If we are successful in getting this film before the eyes of the millions we are trying for, and if we do make it accessible, then it can become viral, and that may be this one time we can create an example of how a film, literally can change the world.”
This documentary also shows the Bilheimer’s courage, four years of questioning, searching, and probing into the roots of human trafficking. It shows the hundreds of victims and survivors, who suffered injustice, suffering, cruelty and life-long battle against those evil human beings. But at the same time, this documentary is also very inspiring and shows the human spirit, resilience, and it’s influential ability to heal from any wound.
