After months of tense relations between United Nation and Pakistan, finally some understanding has been reached between the two countries, who are also allies in the war against terror. As a part to ease the tensions between Washington and Islamabad United States Secretary Clinton made a two day trip to Pakistan.
On Friday Secretary completed her visit to Pakistan and it is believed that her visit helped United States to develop understanding with Pakistan, as per US media reports. The Secretary of State admitted after concluding her talks with Pakistani leaders that “help with a negotiated settlement is perhaps the best the US can hope for from Pakistan.”
Earlier the United States was urging Pakistan to start a military operation against the Haqqani network that was involved in several attacks on American soldiers, including the recent attack on US consulate in Afghanistan. According to US Haqqani network is operating from the border area of Pakistan and Afghanistan.
However, when the news broke that US on one hand was pushing Pakistan to take military action against Haqqani network, was having talks with the same group on the other hand, which pushed the Americans on the back foot and afterwards America decided not to accuse Pakistan or ISI publically regarding their relations with the terrorist groups.
Infect during a press briefing in Islamabad, Secretary Clinton also acknowledged publically US had made direct contact with the representatives of the Haqqani group. To clarify the US stance on making contact with the Haqqani group, Secretary Clinton said, “This shift in the US stance could give Washington and Islamabad new room to cooperate on ending the Afghan war.”
Secretary Clinton also said that “Nobody would be fair to say that all of either problems are anybody else’s fault. There do have to be decisions made in both Pakistan and Afghanistan to strengthen democracy and democratic institutions to deal with the security challenges.”
However, the US had also asked Pakistan to take serious measures in order to shut down the safe havens of the terrorist groups because as it wouldn’t be possible to launch a successful military operation, if these radicals keep on shifting from one side to the other side of the border.
