United States and United Nations intervened into the matter to diffuse the tension between the two nuclear-armed states, fearing that the aggravation could lead to the use of nuclear weapons. Pakistan was forced to carry out a few arrests of the members of the groups accused by India after getting supplied with proof, which included recorded conversations, weapons and interrogations. The only terrorist to be captured alive from the 26/11 incident, Ajmal Kasab, reportedly admitted that he was actually from Pakistan, a claim that was initially rejected but later accepted by the Pakistani government.
Sympathising with India, America and majority of the other countries pressurised Pakistan to take an effective action against the extremist elements residing in Pakistan., namely the ones indentified in the investigation report of Mumbai attacks India also laid the blame on ISI, but the evidence against the Pakistani intelligence agency was simply not substantial.
India was not satisfied with the efforts to bring those responsible for the Mumbai attacks to justice and continued to complain to America, which was playing the role of a mediator. America needed Pakistan as an ally in its war against terrorism and self-preservation and thus refrained from out-rightly supporting Indian claims regarding Pakistan’s involvement in terrorism on the Indian soul, but judging by the way India enjoys America’s support in Afghanistan, America stance on the situation seems to be pretty obvious.
There is an ongoing debate over the presence and influence of Indian in Afghanistan. What business does India have in Afghanistan and that too at a time when the relations between India and Pakistan are so tense?
In her interview to Jang, Dr. Maria Sultan, head of the Institute of Strategic Studies Islamabad, stated, “The United States wants to assign more roles to India in Afghanistan. However, instead of proving helpful, the Indian role has becoming a cause in further deepening the crisis. The terrorism spread by the Indian intelligence agency, Research and Analysis Wing (RAW) in Pakistan through Afghanistan continues in the name of India-US cooperation in war on terror.”
Dr. Maria has made it quite evident that the growing influence of India in Afghanistan is only contributing to an increased terrorist activity in Pakistan, jeopardizing the security situation of the country even further.
