Canada on Monday announced eight new projects costing US $11 million for the flood affected people of Pakistan.
Canada’s Minister of International Cooperation, Beverley J Oda said that his country is greatly concerned for the people of southern Pakistan who have been affected by recent monsoon rains and floods.
“Canada is greatly concerned for the people of Pakistan affected by recent severe flooding,” said Ontario Minister of International Cooperation Beverley J Oda according to a press release issued from Ottawa on Monday. “We are responding to emergency appeals by humanitarian organisations and will continue to monitor this evolving situation to ensure Canada is supporting those who need it the most,” he added further.
A spell of heavy monsoon rains, which started in mid-August this year, has led to extensive flooding in Sindh and Balochistan province of Pakistan. According to United Nations report, approximately 5.8 million people have been affected by the rains and the ongoing flooding. Around 1.8 million people have been displaced and are living in extremely difficult conditions.
“Pakistan is still rebuilding from the 2010 flooding,” said Oda. “Canada responded with the humanitarian assistance and early recovery support then, and Canada will continue to stand by the people of Pakistan,” the Canadian minister added further.
Canada will fund the recently announced projects through the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA). All the projects will be managed by the Canadian non-governmental organisations, the United Nations organisations, and International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC).
CIDA’s support will help the World Food Programme, the World Health Organisation, the International Organisation for Migration. The statement from Ottawa said that the UNICEF will provide emergency food assistance to up to 2.55 million individuals and emergency shelters and essential non-food relief items to 80,000 households.
In addition, the United Nations Organisations will provide access to emergency healthcare in the flood-affected areas. Provision of targeted nutritional support to prevent and treat cases of moderate and severe malnutrition among children under the age of five, as well as pregnant and lactating women is also be part of the announced projects.
With CIDA funding, Oxfam Canada, World Vision Canada and Save the Children Canada will provide the flood-affected population with safe drinking water and sanitation facilities as well as shelter and essential household goods.

Saudi Arabia has always been a great friend in difficult times as recently King Abdullah’s Relief Campaign for Pakistani People (KARCPP) has assured to provide funds for relief and development projects living in Punjab and Sindh flood-affected areas. I hope these funds will be used transparently and be utilized for flood-affected people only.
