The thing about most underground bands in Pakistan is that they either stick merely towards the composition of stereotypical, ‘aadat’ sort of songs or prefer covers. Sheer composition of lyrics, few readjustments of riffs and power chords make up the whole ballad – literally speaking, this is becoming quite lame!
But for a band like Jumbo Jutt, things are slightly different – in fact things are rather ‘jumbo’, especially after earning a massive ground on Karachi’s underground scene and that in a short span of time.
Jumbo Jutt is built on Mohammad Ali Sohail on vocals and lead guitars, Syed Saad Shams on bass guitar, and Adeel Hussain on drums – a coalition of Karachi’s hard-core rock stars, who made their alliance in 2009 when Omar Kapadia was part of the line-up, looking after the rhythm guitars; but a few years down the road, he parted ways with Jumbo Jutt.
The band made its first appearance on the mainstream media when their title track ‘Jumbo Jutt’ premiered on the first season of Ufone’s Uth Records, where the ensemble, standing out as the only hard rock performers, nailed a superb performance on the season opener exhibiting the band’s real might and that they meant business.
However, more awesome was their imposing alliance with Faraz Anwar, who took their well constructed composition to a whole new level, especially through his extraordinary leads, and swift finger work on the fret board – all of which spoke of Jumbo Jutt’s might and what the whole concept was all about.
Although there have been many other bands, to name a couple, Beghairat Brigade, and Bumbu Sauce, that have already done quite well in earning a good lot of the audience, merely because of their catchy brand name, but for Jumbo Jutt, it is not only their appealing label, but the work they do, that has earned them a massive share of the Karachi’s audience, thanks to their well composed hard-rock ballads, and that their style of playing, which makes them stand out as the very few who really honour the genre unlike others. In fact, the mighty Faraz Anwar even ranked the band to have the likes of bands such as Audioslave and Silverchair.
When asked about what Jumbo Jutt and its compositions are all about, the band said that “their songs are mostly of rebellious nature with political and social issues – all of which are underlined by the society”.
While for their mega hit title song, Jumbo Jutt was also focused on the ongoing political unrest in the country and how the nation is quietly taking it all without even questioning them.
For now, the band is most likely to come out with its first ever album, but it can’t be said as to when it will be released. However, Jumbo Jutt has already been rocking the whole of Karachi with their might, and has now become a common name on the city’s underground scene.
In the end, according to the band, Jumbo Jutt, which has still mega heights to conquer, not just in Karachi, but throughout the nation, believes that the whole concept is about the tired residue of oppressed suffering due to the constant confusion, corruption and fear that the nation has had to face relentlessly. But all while, also a reflection of hope that perhaps someday things might get better. Jumbo Jutt is an amalgamation of all of the above. But most importantly of all, it’s a kickass rock band!!
