Mario Balotelli’s “Why Always Me?” ethos applied to Pakistan’s society

Manchester City’s prodigal adopted son, Mario Balotelli, had nothing to do with Pakistan whatsoever that is until his side’s recent match against their bitter neighbourhood rivals, Manchester United.
However, after scoring his side’s first goal, the flamboyant Italian lifted up his Manchester City jersey to reveal the words “Why always me?” printed on a shirt he was wearing underneath. While that may have brought on a wave of hysteric laughter at the time, it did do one other thing.
In essence, it pretty much summed up the general ethos, or mindset, of Pakistan society. The reader need just think about it, not in footballing terms, but how the people of this country prefer to shun responsibility and when it is finally thrust upon them one can see the phrase “why always me?” emanating from their faces.
As a community Pakistan is strong, as individuals the people of Pakistan are stronger still; able to do anything when they put their mind to it.
One example is Ibrahim Shahid who holds the current world record for most ‘A’ grades in the O’Levels examinations, beating every other candidate who took the exam with him and before him.
That is just one example; there are many other examples of citizens of this country achieving greatness on a global platform.
It is no wonder then that one finds the lack of adequate leadership in the country’s government a puzzling and confounding phenomenon. If this country has so much talent and ability then surely it would have translated into a more able and competent government by now?
Once again, it is here we go back to the words of Balotelli, “Why always me?” It seems that the people of this country prefer to wait for a leader to spring up and help them out of the ditch the country is in, instead of looking in the mirror and taking responsibility themselves.
Shunning responsibility and running away from duty when things get tough are two characteristics a majority of the people of Pakistan share, which have led to the current state of affairs in the country.
Right now, the people of Pakistan are a living breathing example of Balotelli’s shirt, when instead what this country needs is a new attitude, one which shouts, “why not me!”, only then can this country truly be lead by the people and from the people.
