"US not planning a military operation in FATA" says US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton
Tuesday, October 25th, 2011 5:55:04 by Farhan KhalidPolitical Relations between Pakistan that had already got grotesque after US decided to carry on a cloak and a dagger operation to annihilate the master mind of September 11th attacks, Osama Bin Laden got worse when only recently US accused Pakistan’s intelligence of supporting Haqqani group in its attack on the US embassy and NATO headquarters in Kabul.
Admiral Michael Mullen, chairman of the US Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee labeled Haqqani network as the “veritable arm” of the Pakistani’s intelligence ISI which created outrage in the political and military ranks of Pakistan.
US is continuing to pressurize Pakistan to “do more” and just a week ago, a delegate consisting of the US secretary of state Hillary Clinton was sent for the purpose.
Hillary Clinton’s showed her concerns over the safe havens of Pakistani Talibans in Kabul and requested Pakistan to act more aggressively against the Talibans. Talking to media about the particulars of the visit after landing back to US, she said
“There’s a lot going on that is aimed at these safe havens, and we will continue to work with them on that. There are different ways of fighting besides overt military action, and I think this is an important point of clarification. We have asked the Pakistanis to squeeze the Taliban and the Haqqani network. We recognize that, given their resources, it would be difficult for them to launch military action at this time”
She also added that instead of asking for a direct military operation, US wanted Pakistan to “make sure that we are totally synced up on intelligence” to avoid any further attacks arising from the FATA.
Hillary displayed a greater understanding of Pakistan’s expostulation that Afghanistan had allowed Pakistani Talibans to built safe heavens inside the territory and said in her meetings with the Government officials, she discussed the future strategies relating to eradicating the terrorists that are in hiding
“We shared information about what we’re seeing happening on the other side of the border in Afghanistan, because we admitted there are safe havens there from which Pakistan is attacked, which I believe it’s important to acknowledge. What we did which was so important was to reach an understanding … and I came away believing that we’ve cleared the air, we had set some clear parameters, and now we have to get about the hard work of actually operationalising what our agreement is”
She said she is aware of the fact that Pakistan has sacrificed a lot in this war but Pakistan must cooperate with US to see an end to this.
