Lashkar-e-Jhangvi leader given an extended detention

Malik Ishaq, leader of Lashkar-e-Jhangvi, has been given an extension in his detention sentence. The terrorist has been acquitted with a number of cases against him and his confinement has been upped by 60 days.

The founder of the much feared terror group has been charged with 34 cases against him but has been granted bail in 10.

Ishaq has been dominating the headlines since his party rose to prominence during the 1990s, however President Musharraf banned the organization in his tenure in 1999.

It was later as an act of revenge that Malik Ishaq nearly succeeded in assassinating the President in 2003. But that does not sum up the atrocities committed by the convict.

Ishaq is rumoured to be the main perpetrator in the kidnapping and the eventual murder of Daniel Pearl in 2002. Pearl, the American journalist was grabbed from Karachi and despite a country-wide man hunt to find him, was found killed by Lashkar-e-Jhangvi.

The activities of the illicit organization are not limited to murdering foreigners, as Pakistani Shias have also been targeted in the past. But the most recent killing done under the order of Malik Ishaq is rumoured to be the attack on the Sri Lankan cricket team in 2009.

The Sri Lankan team were hit by barrage of bullets in Lahore and it claimed the lives of seven players, an assistant alongside eight Pakistanis. However what is most sinister about the tragedy is that Ishaq was in jail during the attack and it is alleged that he orchestrated them without ever leaving his cell.

With cases by the dozen against him, the Punjab Government has again extended his detention by 60 days according to jail superintendent, Shahid Naeem Sheikh.

Speaking to reporters, the Police officer revealed that the Punjab Government had indeed extended Ishaq’s detention after the previous order has expired.

“The authorities have extended his detention for another 60 days.”

“We received a notification from the Punjab government after the expiry of the previous order on Tuesday,” jail superintendent Shahid Naeem Sheikh was quoted as saying.

Deemed as a great threat to the people of Pakistan, Malik Ishaq faces a long list of charges and is likely to be a given the maximum sentence under the law.
