Nokia announced the new Lumia-series, 800 and 710 at the Nokia World Event 2011
Wednesday, October 26th, 2011 7:23:11 by Usman KhalidAfter a wait of almost one year Nokia has at last entered the smartphone market with their new line of phones, Nokia Lumia 800 and Lumia 710.
Nokia announced in January 2011 that they will be closely working with Microsoft Corporation to develop a new line of smartphones that will incorporate the Windows Phone 7.
With the development of new Windows Phone 7.5 Mango, the launch of Lumia series was pushed to the fourth quarter of 2011. However, Nokia raised the curtain on their smartphones on Wednesday, October 26 (approximately 0830 GMT) at Nokia World Event 2011.
Although more news on the specification of the new handsets is still pouring in, the basic hardware and software have been revealed in the event.
As predicted, the new phones include the Windows Phone 7.5 Mango with several customized skins and application for both 800 and 710.
The Lumia 800 has a 1.4 GHz processor with a dedicated GPU for better graphics on 3.7-inch AMOLED ClearBlack screen. The graphics look sharper with dedicated graphics unit and smoother with the high-speed processor.
There is an 8 mega-pixel rear-facing camera with best-in-industry Carl Zeiss lens in it however; details on the front-facing camera are still awaited.
The internal memory of the phone is reported to be 16 GB whereas it supports up to 32 GB of micro SD card. Bluetooth and WiFi are standard features of the phone.
The phone is available in black, magneta and cyan colours with accordingly matching skins in the OS. The starting price of the smartphone is tagged at 420 Euros.
The other denomination of the series, the Lumia 710 is the low-end budget-friendly smartphone. It has the same processor clock speed and the internal storage but the phone has low-end resolution with a relatively smaller screen size.
The 710 comes with a detachable rear casing that is available in five attractive colours; black, white, cyan, fuchsia and yellow. There is a 5 mega-pixel camera at the rear end however; like its big brother, details on the front-facing camera are yet to surface.
The Lumia 710 starts at an amazing price of 270 Euros. Both 800 and 710 are available in Russia, Taiwan, India, Hong Kong and Singapore this year with more countries pooling in at the start of 2012. Various wireless, LTE and GSM networks have been contracted to provide services to the new phones.
The Nokia N-series and E-series had been beleaguering in the cellular industry especially after the advent of iOS devices like the iPhone and Google’s Android-based devices like the HTC line of smartphones. The new Lumia-series is the make-or-break product that might revive Nokia’s market share it once had.
