Wednesday, October 26: President of Pakistan Asif Ali Zardari has called for promotion of interfaith harmony amongst the religiously diverse society of the country. The President also called for protecting the rights of minorities in the country.
Zardari made the acquaintance to Hindu community, who were celebrating the festival of Diwali. The president being a representative of Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) and people of the Pakistan showed his heartiest greetings to the Hindu and scheduled castes.
Zardari sent a message to the community that read, “I wish to extend on my behalf, on behalf of the Pakistan Peoples Party and on behalf of the people of Pakistan heartiest greetings to the Hindu and scheduled castes community on the occasion of Diwali.”
The President further said that, it is a time for celebration but it is also a time for reflection. He continued and reiterated that Pakistani’s should rededicate their selves to continually striving in the path of good and noble.
Hindu centre of population have been celebrating the festival of Diwali for centuries all over the world, they do this to rejoice the victory of good over evil.
Pakistan is going through an economic turmoil because of recent natural calamities and terrorism threats; because of this the Pakistan’s Hindu community has decided to observe the festival with simplicity.
The President acknowledging their efforts said, “At a time when floods have ravaged the country particularly in Sindh, the Hindu community have decided to observe the festival with simplicity in view of Begum Nusrat Bhutto’s death, the celebrations should serve to remind that we need to help those in need of help.”
Zardi takes Diwali as a means to fight religious apartheid and those who seek to impose their ideological agenda on the people. The president considers all minorities, including the Hindus, as equal citizens of the country and wants them to play their part in the growth of economy.
The President is against religious fundamentalism and said, “Let it be made clear yet again today that no one will be allowed to victimize and hound members of minority communities in the name of religion and faith.”
