As Eidul Azha draws closer, sacrificial animals have started arriving in Islamabad and Rawalpindi like other cities of Pakistan. However, people of the twin cities are not investing much interest in these animals like they should, the reason being due to high prices.
People are ending up as hapless observers because of the soaring prices of the sacrificial animals, even those people who visit the market with intent to buy these sacrificial animals.
The reason for these high prices could be the devastations caused by floods in Sindh and other parts of the country and also because of that the sharp increase in petroleum over the period of last 12 months were core factors behind skyrocketing rates of sacrificial animals this year.
So far and at present, a small number of animals, particularly goats and sheep have arrived in the city and the prices start from Rs. 10,000 because of limited number of animals available for sale.
The prices of bulls in the market have increased from 25,000 Rs to 45,000 per animal as compared to last year’s prices.
Price of A category bull has increased from 75,000 to Rs 100,000 and it doesn’t stop there, and when the prices of category B bulls are observer, they have hiked from 40,000 Rs to 60,000.
People cannot say that they are surprised, especially the middle class who feared that the high prices of other commodities, would automatically mean that the rates of the sacrificial animals would also remain out of the reach of the general public.
The city district government has allotted ten open spaces for establishment of sacrificial animals “Mandis” for Eid-ul-Azha which are mainly in outer parts of the city.
In case a large number of animals arrive in the city in the coming days before the Eid, the prices are expected to go down and the maximum numbers of animals are expected to be sold on the day before Eid-ul-Azha as usual.
Additional Chief Executive Officer (ACEO) Kamran Towfeeq told newsmen that there would be three “mandis” in the cantonment area at Chor Chowk, Dhoke Saydian and Dhoke Gujran.
