Drone strike kills five Taliban commanders including Maulvi Nazir in South Waziristan

A drone strike has reportedly killed five Taliban commanders in South Waziristan including Maulvi Nazir, according to a senior member of the organization.

The United States has been conducting drone strikes in and around Pakistan’s border area with Afghanistan for some time. While the efficiency of such attacks has long been questioned, the US claims that they have been successful in eradicating terrorists
from the region using these methods.

Another one of these drone attacks took place today and according to reports, it was successful in claiming the life of Maulvi Nazir, a senior Taliban commander, amongst others.

While the details are still sketchy it is reported that around five missiles were launched on the terrorists, who were travelling in vehicles from Tora Gola and did not survive the strike.

Amongst the alleged casualties are Hazrat Omar, Khan Mohammad, Miraj Wazir, Ashfaq Wazir and not to mention, Maulvi Nazir.

Pakistani Intelligence agents verified that the strike had actually taken place and also revealed that Maulvi Nazir’s brother had also been killed during the process.

Speaking to reporters, an official from the Pakistani Intelligence confirmed that Nazir’s brother had perished during the strike, while another official confirmed the death of the Taliban commander.

“Nazir’s younger brother Omar Wazir has been killed, it has been confirmed,” a Pakistani Intelligence official said.

According to the local residents of the area, Omar Wazir had not only been close to his brother but was also an influential member of the Taliban, as he made sure that everyone was doing their job properly.

Mansur Khan Mehsud of the Fata Research Centre think tank also spoke about the group and revealed that although they have their main base of operations in Pakistan, their reach extended into Afghanistan and they were amongst the most targeted by the drone
strikes.

“They are a very important group because while they are based in Pakistan they are very active in Afghanistan.”

“If you look at drone strikes, they are one of the most heavily targeted groups,” Mehsud said.

While another ‘top official’ of the Taliban has been killed, the US-led drone strikes also claims the lives of many civilians every year, something which has been a major criticism of the operation.
