Thursday, October 27th, 2011 5:41:05 by Sonia BashirThe local leaders of Pakistan People’s Party have welcomed approval of Rs. 18 billion for Lowari tunnel. The members said that the project’s completion would usher
in a new era of development and employment.
Addressing a news conference, general secretary PPP, Chitral Mohammad Hakim Khan, vice-president Shamsur Rehman and coordination secretary Iqbal Hayat said the locals
were thankful to President Asif Zardari, Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani, governor Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Masood Kausar and communication minister Arbab Alamgir for their sincere efforts to the release of the delayed Lowari tunnel funds.
They said the tunnel, which was to connect the country with Central Asian Republics, would bring prosperity and jobs to Chitral to the benefit of the locals, especially
youth. The Lowari Tunnel project would benefit the entire province. The natural and hydel resources of the district could be effectively utilised after completion of the project.
The PPP leaders accused the local MNA Shehzada Mohiyuddin of falsely claiming the credit for the Rs. 18 billion funds’ approval and said the prime minister ordered
the release of money on his own.
They said Prime Minister Yusuf Raza Gilani had assured on the floor of the assembly that the project would be completed during his tenure so that the promises made
by the democratic government with the people could be fulfilled and the country witnesses an era of prosperity.
The PPP members said the uplift projects in the underdeveloped areas would not only create job opportunities but also slow down the migration of population to the
urban areas. They said the project was the lifeline of Chitral district. They asked the government to utilise all available means to stop the cross-border attacks in Chitral from Afghanistan in order to provide safety to the construction company involved in
the project.
Lowari tunnel is one of mega national level developmental scheme. It will not only facilitate the people of the area, but also strengthen our road links with Central
Asian States and other neighbouring countries, adding that it will be helpful for promotion of trade, economy, tourism, industry, agriculture and other broader spectrum of the areas.
