Film critics have given mixed responses to Shahrukh Khan’s science fiction flick ‘Ra One’, which released this Diwali on Wednesday, October 26, 2011.
The movie has been praised for its special effects, but the storyline has been criticised by majority of the critics.
According to a top Indian critic Taran Adarsh, “Ra One raises the bar, takes not a step or two, but a giant leap and adheres to international standards, in terms of execution. But the soul, I wish to add, is very desi. That’s precisely the reason why Ra
One emerges trumps.”
Another film reviewer Mayank Shekhar saw the movie, but was not impressed at all and said that the fans will be disappointed after watching the film.
Shekhar claimed, “For most parts, this doesn’t seem a super-hero movie at all. It’s more of a weirdly boiled, Bollywood please all: vaguely soppy romance, Salman-type sasta (cheap)
comedy, narcissistic SRK set piece. Die-hard fans of all three genres are likely to be disappointed.”
Although the movie did not live up to the expectations of the critics, fans worldwide have turned out in big numbers to watch the movie and the reaction has been positive.
Many believed that Ra One will not be able to get a strong start, as people will be busy in celebrating Diwali. However, all the shows on day one were sold out and the film earned approximately 16 crores.
This was still not enough to break Salman Khan’s action flick ‘Bodyguard’ which collected 21 crores on day one.
However, a film distributor in Delhi Sanjay Ghai had predicted this before the release of Ra One. He claimed that the science fiction film will be unable to beat Bodyguard’s first day earnings, but will break its five day record, which was 80 crores.
Bollywood analyst Komal Nahta claimed that the release date of Ra One was not ideal and the film would have done a better business had it been released on the second day of Diwali.
According to Komal, most families are busy in ‘laxmi pooja’ on day one of Diwali and the ideal release date would have been Thursday, October 27, 2011.
