In view of country’s vulnerability to disasters, National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) is working on National Disaster Management Plan and Multi Hazard Contingency Plan to minimise loss of lives and property during natural calamities.
The country is vulnerable to wide-ranging hazards from droughts to floods to earthquakes to cyclones and suffering from a major dearth for the last several years which is unfortunately continuing with varying degrees in all over the country.
In order to deal with such disasters NDMA is working in establishing of National Institute of Disaster Management in the country.
Sources informed that the government has provided a piece of land for this project, however, funds have not released thus far. He further said this project will be completed in 2013 while the authority will appeal international donors for early completion
of this project. Experts from Japan will also provide design of this project, he added.
Sources maintained that NDMA was working on four major projects including Multi Hazard Warning System, Contingency Based Disaster Risk Management and formation of National Institute of Disaster Management.
Besides this, it is also formulating multi hazard contingency plan for forecasting about moonson seasons in the country.
Spokesperson of NDMA Ahmed Kamal said that following the predictions about disasters in future years, the authority planned to establish Disaster Risk Reduction Policy. The work on this policy would be completed in early months of 2012. He said that UN will
provide technical and financial assistance for this project.
Ahmed Kamal further stated that United Nation was also providing funds in establishment of short and long term weather forecast system for meteorological department.
He said that NDMA was working in collaboration with different international organizations regarding disaster management and in this regard it has started a project with the Government of Japan.
He continued that they are working on different projects in provision of training to different organisations regarding disaster management.
In the concluding remarks, the spokesperson was of the opinion that NDMA has not sufficient funds for developmental projects. He, however, stated that the response from international donors is satisfactory.
