The President of Pakistan, Asif Ali Zardari has said that his country has suffered the most from the terrorism than any other country.
“No country has made greater contributions and sacrifices in fighting terrorism than Pakistan,” said the Pakistan president in an interview with a leading Turkish newspaper, Hurriyet.
Zardari, who is in Istanbul to attend sixth trilateral Turkey-Afghanistan-Pakistan summit on Afghanistan, said that Pakistan has suffered great loss in the war against terrorism, losing its more than 36,000 innocent citizens including men, women and children.
Besides humanitarian loss, the Pakistan economy has incurred an economic loss of over US$70 billion.
The Pakistan President, who is also the husband of former Pakistan Prime Minister and the PPP chairperson Shaheed Benazir Bhutto, said that no one can question Pakistan’s commitment in fighting against the terrorism.
“We have lost our great leader and my wife Shaheed Benazir Bhutto in the hands of terrorists. No one should question our commitment or intentions in fighting the war,” stressed the Pakistan President.
Zardari is also scheduled to meet his Afghan counterpart, Hamid Karzai on the sidelines of the summit. This would be the first one-to-one meeting of the two after the assassination of former Afghan President and Peace Council head Burhanuddin Rabbani.
Replying to a query, the Pakistan President said, “Let’s talk about peace and not war. Democracy always favors dialogue over confrontation. Peace with everyone.”
Zardari further added that the international community owes it to Pakistan to support it in the fight against militant mindset
President Zardari said that Turkey and Pakistan have supported each other in their wars of independence as well as in natural disasters and calamities. “We are One Nation living in Two States,” said Zardari.
He further added that Pakistan is grateful to the Turkish president, Abdullah Gul and the Turkish nation for their deep compassion and sublime generosity towards the millions of Pakistanis who have been affected by the floods in 2010 and 2011 as well as
in the deadly earthquake of October 2005.
