Imran Khan: An agent of change in Pakistan
Monday, October 31st, 2011 12:18:38 by Faisal FarooqImran Khan: An agent of change in Pakistan
It was a fine Sunday, the weather was nice, there was no chance of police baton charge and there wasn’t any chance of any terrorist attack either. If the vote bank of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf doesn’t have the stomach for not more than-perfect surroundings,
then Sunday’s conditions were superlative for a rally and a power show.
The massive PTI’s rally at Minar-e-Pakistan in Lahore may be the beginning of a political tipping point. The gist of Imran Khan’s address was to a degree familiar. Few in the spectators, those in front of their TV sets and those that formed the gathering,
will doubt the genuineness and of Imran on numerous issues, particularly on the issues of corruption, load shedding and bad governance.
But sincerity is not manifestos that explain how exactly the perceived commitments are to be met. Imran indeed described some hints as to how some of these problems would be resolved, which are making him different from the rest of our mainstream politicians.
PTI’s Chief announced his immediate political programme in terms of a warning of civil disobedience in all the major cities of the country if the politicians in power fail to declare their assets.
Time will be the best arbitrator of the perception or otherwise of civil disobedience over this issue. However, such a movement to happen it is essential that PTI politics gain grips beyond Lahore and move other parts of the country.
It is quite clear that there is no longer possibility to dismiss Imran Khan as some sort of also-ran in the race. He may not be the good public orator in the country, but the audience he spoke were his own choice rather than as the result of payment or arm-twisting.
The gathering was mainly youngsters out of which only few were women. Some of them will cast their votes for the first-time and they do not have settled political commitment thus far. The choices they make in the next general elections can break an elderly
mould that has prevailed for long time.
In extent unaccompanied the rally outnumbered the show of PML-N held day before yesterday. It will be a real challenge for the PML-N whom Lahore is a power base.
If PTI and Imran Khan can convert a mass of people into a mass of votes and then become a new class of law makers, then the change is not far from the country.
