Snail farming the new phenomenon in Bulgari
Monday, October 31st, 2011 8:12:15 by Awais KhanBulgarian farmers have found a new revenue stream in the current economic conditions.
The agricultural land holders are shifting towards snail farming to meet costs of business and are reaping benefits from the extra cash they are making.
It is a business that is silently booming and has untapped potential. Grown in this part of the world, it has a huge demand the world over, especially in Far East Asia, France and Asia.
Farmers in Bulgaria have taken inspiration from their counterparts in France. The snail farming business is booming in the current economic conditions, and is set to increase in the coming years.
With a very low risk profile, it is a business that the farmers have likened to the ‘gold rush.’
From a time when there were only a handful of growers, the business has boomed in a short span. Three years ago only twenty farmers were involved in the trade, the numbers have increased phenomenally.
Now, at least 200 farmers are involved in snail farming, their involvement in the trade varying on different scales. The good news is there are more lining up to get on the act.
Farms can be of different sizes, and the biggest ones in Bulgaria have grown to produce 50 million in a calendar year.
Bulgaria is one of the poorest countries in EU, and the rural areas are the most affected areas of the former communist regimes.
The farmers are still reeling from the inefficient system in place and the global recession has not been kind on them. In these conditions, snail farming offers a profitable niche from their already established revenue streams.
Following the success of the farms, it is a sigh of relief for the agrarians of the country. Bulgarian farmers have been desperate to come to terms with the recession, and are finding their ways out of their problems thanks to this new phenomenon.
The best thing about this unconventional farming technique is the low costs involved. Interested personnel can get land for cheap on rent and get started with relatively low labour and other input costs.
Experienced farmers have cautioned new comers that they should not consider it as an easy fix to earn money. Like all trades, it requires commitment and hard work to reap the benefits.
