Give Peace a Chance

The political leadership of Pakistan and the United States of America have refused to learn from their mistakes on the so-called war against terrorism. It is a historical fact that an ideological war cannot be won through weapons and not surprisingly, US
has failed to capture the majority of Afghanistan, even after 10 years of warfare in South Asia.
There is a strong opinion that Pakistan and the US should go for a political solution to this problem and with the passage of time it has become impossible to remove terrorism by force in this region. Recently, US has been trying to convince the Pakistani
officials to take military action against the Haqqani Network in South Waziristan.
However, it is not in favour of Pakistan to damage their relations with the Afghan Taliban because the Americans are planning to evacuate Afghanistan by 2014 and it is most likely that Taliban would be able to form a government once again as soon as the
US forces leave the country.
Historically speaking, Taliban have been pro-Pakistan and it is in the interest of Pakistan to have good relations with the neighbouring country. This is the major reason why, Pakistani government and the Army is reluctant to take an action against the Haqqani
Network, which is an integral part of the Afghan Taliban, under Mulla Omar.
Till date, Pakistan has been able to stand against the pressure of the US but the Prime Minister of Pakistan, Yousuf Raza Gillani has said recently that his government supports the military action against the extremists and their power must the destroyed
through force.
Gillani said, “We are supporting military action against terrorists and extremists. The terrorists are working against the interest of my country and we are fighting for the peace, prosperity and progress of the entire world."
He further added that the support of the people is extremely crucial in this war and all the decisions shall be taken by the National Assembly of Pakistan.
“Nobody can win a war without the support of masses. All the political forces (in Pakistan) including the parliament are on one page," the Prime Minister added.
This is exactly the policy Pakistan and the US have followed in the last decade and has miserably failed to gain any kind of a success. Secondly, Mr. Gillani has always been stating about the supremacy of the parliament but even a common man in the country
knows that who has been calling all the shots and the parliament has been no more than just a ‘dummy’.
One of the most popular political leaders of Pakistan, Imran Khan has been craving for a peaceful solution since many years and this is the reason why, he has gained immense popularity in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
It is about time that some sense prevails amongst the political leadership of US and Pakistan and they give ‘peace a chance’.
