Khanpur Dam that was originally built to accommodate water needs for Islamabad and Rawalpindi over last 4-5 years has transformed into a vacationist spot.

The captivating lake is only 48 kilometers away from Islamabad and around 150 kilometers from Khyber Pukhtunkhwa’s capital, Peshawar.

Area around Khanpur dam has been embellished with flowering trees and disbursed with picnic spots and exotic isolated paths. The garden is used for multi purposes such as fishing and boating and the most elevated point in the garden provides a breathtaking
view of Margalla Hills of Islamabad.

The first time I visited the place some four years back, there was nothing except the lake. However, two to three years later, the place was totally restructured. All of a sudden, Khanpur emerged as one of the prime tourist spots for people residing in Islamabad
and vicinities.

The reason, khanpur’s fame has skyrocketed in last two three years is primarily because of the Khanpur Festival which is witnessed by thousands throughout the country. I consider myself fortunate enough to have witnessed it already last year.

It’s a three days exciting event and keeps the tourists occupied with colorful attractions such as cultural acts (folk dances, rock and pop acts) magic and puppet shows to entertain children along with a mini zoo.

Then there are Hot Balloon rides, hand gliding, Para sailing, motorized gliding, water scooting, banana boat rides, speed boating, dirt biking, archery, paintball, mountain climbing, camping, scuba diving, sky diving, etc to crave needs of adventure seeking
individuals.

The place that is usually quiet over the 362 days of year is filled with life for three days during the festival.

As a result of the uttermost success, authorities are now planning to erect restaurants and guest houses which will allow people to stay there over night more comfortably as currently those that plan to spend night there have to stay in camp.

In coming years, more attractions will be introduced that will take the fame of festival to new heights. I won’t be surprised if Khanpur festival grows into one of the most acclaimed festivals in the country.
