According to many critics, the transportation of goods are one of the major factors behind a high level of pollution and also blame transportation of goods as the main reason behind high fuel consumption.
In Sweden, researchers are now carrying out tests on a new technology that aims to reduce these effects. The way our lorries are used on roads would be changed drastically if the tests bear a favourable outcome.
“Intelligent Vehicle” are being tested that will go along the roads in a single pattern that is reminiscent of that of a train. These vehicles will be following in a chain in evenly-spaced vehicular convoys. The same sort of experiments are also conducted
on cars.
The trucks would be able to communicate eachother and will find each other’s coordinates automatically. Scientists say that their main aim is to line up several trucks in a similar way skiers and cyclists line up so that air friction is reduced.
According to scientists, this method could save at least 10% of fuel costs.
Head of research, Tony Sander is highly motivated and hopeful that the tests will be successful.
“There will be space to get in between the trucks; we are considering gaps of between 15-25 meters. So you will be able to get in between and you will be able to pass if you are going fast enough. The system will sense the approaching car and slow down to
make the gap a little bigger,”
Though the tests are certainly creative one wonders if it would be better to use trains instead. Experts claim that they have already used that methodology but using trains in not a very flexible approach as they take a lot of time to unload and load cargo.
The trucks on the other hand, can leave or join a particular convoy or caravan while still moving along the motorway.
Researchers have said that the vehicles are in the final stages of their development and Swedish highways would be seeing the new technology which is expected to become operational next year.
