Imran Khan: the answer to Pakistan’s prayers?

When it comes to politicians in Pakistan, vague images of corrupt leaders with no educational background come to mind. However that perspective is slowly but surely changing with the availability of education and a new hero, Imran Khan Niazi.

The only cricket captain ever to lift the prestigious World Cup trophy, Oxford-educated Imran Khan is seen as new beacon of light in Pakistan, where terrorist attacks and political scandals have become unnervingly common.

During his initial days, Khan, did not have the support of the masses, contrary to that, the 58-year-old was seen as a post-cricketer struggling to make his name in the headlines once again.

His name at social events brought the occasional gossip, but all talks ended in sighs that he could never be elected as a leader which all Pakistani’s crave. But recent events suggest that Khan is on his way up the popularity ladder.

While the far flung rural places will still stick to their traditional way of selling their right to vote, people from the cities especially the youth and the women are increasingly siding with Imran and are no longer clad in PPP or PML-N colours.

PTI’s decision to organise a mass rally in Lahore seems to have rejuvenated the youth of Pakistan, who have been labelled as good-for-nothings, too busily engaged in their own petty affairs to change their homeland.

But for a change, teenagers, both male and female, from all age groups flocked to the Punjab capital and showed their commitment for a change after assembling near Minar-I-Pakistan.

Imran Khan’s promise of not cooperating with the US and opposing their policies to regain Pakistan’s sovereignty seems to be the thing which is most appealing to the masses. The tribal folk are also fiercely loyal to Khan as well, partially due to him being
Pathan and his anti-US ideals.

Although his future is bright, it still remains uncertain whether Khan will be able to reach the highest echelons of Pakistani politics, but what is certain is that he will have the full support of the youth and women who are determined to secure the fate
of the country they love.
