Lack of information and resultant chaos
Wednesday, November 2nd, 2011 9:21:59 by Sharjeel AhmadIt was a bright sunny morning of October. I rose up at 6th am, took bath with cold water, try to furnish myself by pressing my cloths roughly and haphazardly reached Punjab Public Service Commission’s office for an interview as I was one of the
‘lucky’ guys who had happened to pass the written test for a job. The first challenge I confronted with was to park my heavy bike as there was no arrangements for this. After moving to and fro for a while, I had to leave it on God’s disposal alongside the
road.
An important thing that I would like to mention here before proceeding further my story is that I got a phone call from the PPSC office just 12 hours before my scheduled appearance in front of the star-studded panel . The caller, in a very prideful and harsh
tone, told me in a few second that I was supposed to bring attested photocopies of my academic documents with me, and before I could ask him the details, he hanged the receiver. What a hell! Finding a government officer and retreating him to put his prestigious
stump of my degrees was a nerve-breaking phase.
Coming back to the story, I rushed to the PPSC gate holding the earning (degrees) of my whole life in my hands. I found a number of adorned interviewees standing before the closed gate in a wait for opening of their fates. As the gate was close to the narrow
road, it was a challenge for us to save our lives from beasty vehicles and our dresses from the dust and smoke that were awash there.
After a wait of at least a hour, the gate was opened for us. Jumping over a fence, we entered the premises where our destinies were going to be decided. Another painful phase of wait was there to welcome us. As the board management had never bothered about
sitting arrangements outside the reception area, we had to stay in standing position for another hour before we were finally cleared to proceed forward after security checks and identity verifications.
Having passed through a tough process of marking our interview rooms and panels, we reached the office corridor. For another stupid hour, we waited in a queue to submit our original degrees to the illiterate clerks who were behaving like emperors.
We were asked to sit in the iron-made chairs in corridor and wait for our turn. After a long time, some fortunate ones were called for the interview while at least 20 boys including me were stunned after knowing that we were not going to be gauged today.
But why? We were informed that our Masters’ result cards were not duly signed by the Controller of Examination of University of the Punjab. The clerks were of the view that they had already informed us to bring only signed documents.
To be honest with me and my Allah, I admit that none of us was aware of the issue which was neither pointed out in the job advertisement, nor communicated to us by any of the board’s staff members beforehand. Despite this glittering fact, we had no other
option except accepting the pseudo logic of the clerks.
However, we were again asked to sit and wait as the matter was being ‘looked into’. It was getting harder and harder to sit on uncomfortable seats with hunger and thirst as there was no café arrangement there.
When the clock was ticking 3pm, we were kicked out of the office by handing over our documents to us along with rejection letters that required us to reapply for the interview after producing controller signed certificates.
With another hope of being selected for a few posts, we rushed towards our university and do not ask what treatment we were meted out there.
In short, we have reapplied by paying fines and are waiting for some ‘kind’ response which is not likely as the due date has passed.
Is the entire mess not a result of lack of information? Definitely, deplorable!
