No Nawaz! No Nawaz!

Rhetoric from the Muttahida Quami Movement (MQM) and its Quaid Altaf Hussain is something we should expect from the party at any time. It was on a show in abundance once again at the Istehkam-e-Jamhooriyat (Strengthening the Democracy) meeting organised
in Karachi, basically as a response to the PML-N’s anti-government rally held on October 28 in Lahore.
Altaf Hussain’s shouts of ‘No Sharifs, No,’ a respond to the ‘Go Zardari Go’ slogans that were raised at Nasir Bagh, attracted the expected positive response from the audience gathered at the Tibet Centre.
However, those of us known with the MQM’s mode of politics and the techniques it has developed over the years to uphold its clutch would expect nothing less.
The MQM is a party branded for its opportunism and supporting military dictatorships came out on the road in favour of democracy is ironic.
Possibly the party requires to re-examine its plans, take in virtues as well as its faults, and its genuine role in setting us along the route which should take us to true democratic system. At some point, the MQM will also need to mull over the factor of
Imran Khan, given that it was his enormous rally, and not that of the Sharif Brothers, which is the talk of the country right away.
There must have been some who snickered, at least in secret, as they have witnessed the MQM and the PPP united on the political stage yet again.
The drama of alliance and disjointing, characteristics of relations between the two parties have become something of a funny story in the country. However, the political state of affairs involving the PPP and its coalition parties is more than the matter
of drawing-room jokes. It is also a stuff of very real concern for a growing number of citizens.
The MQM looks wise when it speaks of the need for a stable democratic setup. We will all agree that this is necessary to our future. But the party must understand a key factor towards this is building greater solidity in Karachi. It is incredible the MQM
can almost surely contribute greatly towards, and an essential second step would be for the party to clearly define its ties with the Pakistan Peoples Party.
These steps are vital in bringing calm in the political ring and achieving a more competent, and less corrupt, governmental system. This matters far more than political grandstanding or the raising of slogans that is now humdrum.
