Pakistan’s Army has finally agreed with the United States in their recent meeting about restricting Haqqani network’s movement on Pak-Afghan border.
Moreover, two senior Pakistani security officials have confirmed that Pakistani military will not only restrict Haqqanis’ movement but they will also make sure that no member of Haqqani network gets any
shelter within Pakistan’s border.
“We will play our part while coalition forces will stop infiltration from across the border,” said a Pakistani military official.
United States believes that the members of Haqqani network mostly operates from the Pak-Afghan border areas in North Waziristan and as a result to which Washington long demanded Pakistani military to take
actions and finally it seems as if they have been successful in convincing Pakistan.
Pakistani military officials did not disclose their plans to the media but they did confirm a few things. They told the media that Pakistani military will not directly confront the Haqqanis, as they reckon
confronting Haqqanis can play a vital role in Pak-Afghan political relations.
This change on Pakistan’s part is a result of a deal that was hanging in the air between Islamabad and Washington during Hillary Clinton’s recent visit to Pakistan.
Clinton was quoted saying as, “We want to fight, talk and build all at the same time. Part of the reason for that is to test whether these organizations have any willingness to negotiate in good faith.”
According to the reports US has not demanded a full-fledged military operation from Pakistan as they just want Pakistani military to take care of the Haqqani network by any means. US want Pakistan to keep
an eye on the Haqqanis and to convince them for negotiations, if possible.
Media reports from Washington have also pointed towards a new approach by the Obama administration on the Haqqani network. According to the reports US just wants Pakistan to provide them with intelligence
on Haqqanis’.
“Instead, the administration says, it is pressing the Pakistanis to provide intelligence on the Haqqanis, arrest some of the group’s operatives and reduce ties to the terrorist group – all steps well short
of military action,” the official said. “We’re at the point where Pakistanis have told us they’re going to squeeze the Haqqani network.”
