Pakistani Society: The uncensored truth (Part 3)

One of the most prevalent plagues in our society is that of men, mostly in their youth, harassing women. While the intended motivation for indulging in this uncivilised behaviour is not clear, this repulsive activity may be attributed to the frustration,
desperation and sick minds of the men.
The conservative atmosphere in the country does not allow men and women to freely interact and understand each other. While the idea behind keeping the men at a safe distance from women is to ensure that the society does not lose itself in immorality, the
plan backfires due to the advent of internet and cable.
Majority of the men form their opinion about women based on what they view on internet or cable television. A woman is portrayed as a thing rather than a human with feelings. The Hollywood and Bollywood industry also play their role in distorting the image
of the woman and presents them as desperate. Watching such women on television and internet, the male population ends up getting the impression that the portrayed image of women is their reality. They fail to separate fiction from reality. They start assuming
that women dress up to entice them and their world revolves around men. Everything action that a girl does – from a flick of her head, to wearing nice clothes, to going out with friends to a restaurant or cafe – is done with the intention of attracting men.
With such a twisted image of women in their mind, the men lose all their respect for the opposite gender and ends up behaving like animals around them. They stare at women, follow them and pass cheap and revolting remarks. Some men go over-board and take
the harassment to the next level by blocking the girl’s path, making indecent offers to her, or even grabbing her arm.
For some reason, all men tend to forget that their own sisters and mothers are women as well. They fail to comprehend the fact that what goes around comes around. While they busy themselves with making life miserable for women by harassing them, someone
else would be doing exactly that to their own sister, on in some cases mother. Some men take a precaution to avoid this situation by forcing the females of their family to wear burqa, an enveloping outer garment worn by women to cover their body in public
places. With the precaution in place, these men go out to seek pleasure by harassing females.
One of the biggest problems in curbing this evil is the denial that men live in. They carry out this activity at some level and yet they refuse to accept it with the fear of getting tagged as scoundrels. Quality education and co-education are playing their
role to control the evil to some extent at school and university level, creating a sense of morality, conscience and sophistication in men. The market areas are still not safe, nor are the isolated streets. A woman is still unsafe with the sick-minded men
on the loose.
