Former Pakistan Cricket team captain, Shahid Afridi, in an unexpected move, has publically declared his support for Imran Khan and his political party, Pakistan Tehriq-e-Insaf (PTI).
Afridi made the announcement at a press conference held outside his house, where a fair number of journalists and news reporters had gathered. There were rumours of former players and celebrities planning on declaring their support for the PTI yet none had
come forward as yet.
Speaking at the conference Afridi began, “I have had a fair amount of free time on my hands and I have found myself asking a lot of questions, the one that seemed the most important was, what can I do for my country?”
“Personally, I considered entering politics myself after the World Cup when the entire country was singing my name.” Conceded the player with the highest wickets in the tournament, before continuing, “But I knew I did not want to enter that game personally
due to the horrible reputation of the politicians in the country.”
“However, when I saw Imran Khan addressing the gathering at Minar-e-Pakistan in Lahore, I was inspired. I have met Imran bhai on a number of occasions and apart from sharing my sentiments on Ijaz Butt, he seems a genuine leader and a genuine person.”
Afridi continued to praise the former World Cup winning captain before dropping the bombshell, “so it is for those reasons that I declare my support for Pakistan Tehriq-e-Insaf and will be working as an ambassador for his campaign.”
When questioned as to what that entailed, Afridi responded, “Basically I hope that all those who follow me, my fans, will support Imran bhai as well. I will also be wearing a PTI armband whenever I play to show my support.”
He went on to explain that he plans on attending a number of rallies and jalsas with the PTI and believes in the change that the charismatic Khan is promising.
Shahid Afridi is the first cricketer to publically announce his support for the Pakistan Tehriq-e-Insaf, with musicians and artists such as Strings and Shehzad Roy not shying away either.
Meanwhile, Nawaz Sharif and his political party, PML-N, were dealt a heavy blow when two of their backers were found guilty of spot-fixing during their trial in England.

Despite all the ”Tamasha” and pandering to popular whims via enrolling these stars like Afridi Shehzad Roy etc, the PTI will still face considerable difficulties in many areas, especially rural areas. Youth in many parts of Pakistan are not necessarily impressed by these shows, as many of them have their own ideologies.
