Thursday, November 3rd, 2011 6:29:37 by Usman KhalidThere have been two kinds of competition in this world since the dawn of human civilization, race to become the richest and fight to become the most powerful.
However, the latter one has been the most influential in all times and the creed of engulfing the world with one’s power has never stopped.
In the recent times, the contention of becoming the most powerful person in the world does not limit itself to politics but the desire of ruling the hearts and souls of the masses has devoured the social and corporate sector as well.
2011’s five most powerful people in the world, who rule the masses one way or the other, are as follows:
1. Barack Obama
Last year, the US President tumbled down to 3rd position in the list owing to the aftermaths of the financial crisis from 2008 through 2010. However, this year the Chief Executive of the US has reclaimed the top seed despite the newest economical
crisis that involves several of his policies toward employment and war on terror.
2. Vladimir Putin
Putin, it seems, has glued himself to the leadership position in Russia. First he served as the Russian President from 2000 to 2008 and then was offered the Prime Minister’s position by his successor-President, Dmitry Medvedev.
Due to his influence in Kremlin, Putin remains second most powerful person in the world. He is planning to run of the presidency again in 2012.
3. Hu Jintao
The President of People’s Republic of China topped the list last year being the most powerful entity in the world. Jintao still remains chief executive world’s most powerful economy and his reign is still growing.
During the last decade, China has lured some of the most influential consumer businesses to its land and has conjured up the global economy shifting the labour concentration to the Far East.
Jintao still holds China’s three most powerful offices: Communist Party General Secretary, Presidency and Commander-in-Chief.
4. Angela Merkel
Germany’s Chancellor and the most powerful woman in the world, Merkel is considered the de facto leader of the European Union. Euro citizens have more faith in her than their own leaders.
However, she has to take some drastic steps in leading Europe out of the current debt crisis even if it takes a toll of her political stance.
5. William ‘Bill’ Gates
Although his annual earnings are a mere $800,000 as of November 2011, his current worth still remains unchanged at $59 Billion. The Microsoft-man gave up the corporate world on philanthropy but still remains the richest person in the world.
He co-chairs Bill & Malinda Gates Foundation along with his wife Malinda Gates, a humanitarian organization dedicated toward the eradication of diseases in the world.
In spite of having deep ties with the corporate world for over three decades, Gates is highly praised by his peers for his humanitarian work, especially in bringing important vaccines within the reach of poor in under developed countries, which makes majority
