Crosbie sorry for Pakistan joke

Lt.-Gov. John Crosbie, who represents the Queen of England in Newfoundland as well as Labrador recently apologized for the derogatory joke he made with reference to Pakistan.

The statement that Crosbie gave was of this effect: ‘ "This fellow said, ‘I was so depressed last night, thinking about the economy, wars, jobs, my savings, social security, retirement funds, etc., I called a suicide hotline and got a call centre in Pakistan.
When I told them I was suicidal, they got all excited and asked if I could drive a truck.” ‘

This is not the first time that Crosbie has come in the limelight because of his comments as he has a reputation for notoriety.

The comments that he made which upset the people of Pakistan were done in a group that consisted of the members of the Progressive Conservative government officials. The joke was made in a room that elicited laughter after Crosbie had finished with its remark
but word got out and reached a students group consisting of Pakistanis at the Memorial University of Newfoundland.

While apologizing for the statements that he made about Pakistan with reference to suicide bombings, Crosbie also expressed his opinion that the amount of criticism that his remarks elicited was shocking for him: "These were jokes to do with … The desperate
economic situation the world now faces, particularly in the United States. However, if some are offended then I would apologize to those offended. They’re not racist jokes or anything else, in my opinion."

Crosbie also stated further that he recognizes the fact that the country of Pakistan has been expericancing social and political problems for a very long time and that the people of Pakistan have been having a hard time dealing with the situation, specially
being right next door to Afghanistan where a lot of suicide bombers are allegedly found. Having said that, Crosbie further added that he did not mean his remarks to be derogatory.

Crosbie is going to turn 80 years of age this year. However, he still has a bit over two years to go before his term finishes in the month of January of 2013.
