MQM and PPP agrees on introducing a new local government system

The Pakistan People’s Party and the Muttahida Qaumi Movement have agreed to introduce a new local government system which will be known as Sindh Local Government System 2011. Both parties believe this
new system will help in ending the urban and rural differences among the people and will bring expectations and aspirations of the people into consideration.

Both political parties after a four-hour session today on Thursday issued an official handout which said that the new system comprising of local government systems of 1979 and 2001 will be presented in
the provincial assembly so it becomes legal.

Most probably the new ordinance will be given a legal cover by the governor. However, officials have not yet confirmed anything to the media.

“The delegations will again meet and the matter will be finalized soon,” official sources said Mazharul Haq, “it has been decided that no leader will brief the media until matter is finalised.”

The PPP has claimed many times that they would take consent of all other parties before taking a final step but Pakistan Muslim League-Functional and Awami National Party stressed that they have not been
asked by anyone.

“No PPP leader has contacted us yet. We still support the commissionerate system and will resist if any other system is imposed without our consent,” PML-F leader Imtiaz Shaikh said.

Moreover, ANP leader, Shahi Syed, also declared that they will oppose the new system as they want the government to do audit first.

“We demand that government should first initiate audit of city district government before introducing a new system because billions of rupees have been misappropriated during the last five years,” he said.

Meanwhile, The Sindh Dost Rabita Council chief Barrister, Zamir Ghumro, along with the Sindhi nationalist leaders, including Jeay Sindh Qaumi Mahaz leader Bashir Qureshi and Jaey Sindh Mahaz Leader Riaz
Chandio, are totally against the new ordinance.

Sindhi nationalist leaders claim the previous government ordinance 2001 was not presented in the Sindh Assembly and it got expired after 2002 elections. They also say that an ordinance cannot be reintroduced
because there was no such provision in the 18th or 19th amendment.
