Mohammad Ali Durrani and Nilofar Bakhtiar leave PML (Q) senate posts

Senators, Mohammad Ali Durrani and Nilofar Bakhtiar, have joined the dissident group after leaving the PML (Q).

Worrying signs have started to emerge for Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain’s party, as they have now lost 11 of their 21 elected members in the Senate. The rebels handed the application for seats in the opposition and the party sources have confirmed that it has
been approved.

“Ms Bakhtiar and Mr Durrani have been formally allocated opposition seats after they moved separate applications and kept on insisting that they have nothing to do with the treasury or their party fellows who have joined the government,” said officials at
the Senate Secretariat.

Of the 11 people who have left the PML (Q), five have joined the like-minded group led by Saleem Saifullah, while rest of them are independent thus far.  There are concerns that the rebel senators are looking to drive out the Party President, Chaudhry Shujaat,
from his position and the sources have confirmed it.

“It will be a critical situation and all depends upon the Senate chairman to decide under his powers,”

The rebel Senators are annoyed with the party leaders for making a coalition with the government and they believe that the party leaders are only looking for their personal benefits while neglecting the public interest. Reports suggest that a small group
of rebel senators are in talks with PML (N) and could join formally join them at any moment.

“The same group has further swelled with joining Nilofar and Durrani and there may be more members joining it in the days to come. They could formally join the PML-N at any time as negotiations are in progress.”

The like-minded group includes Fauzia Fakharuzzaman, Gulshan Saeed, Haroon Akhtar, Ghafar Qureshi and Saleem Saifullah. It is believed that PML (N) senator, Ishaq Dar, is in talks with Durrani and Nilofar Bakhtiar to join their party but both of them are
likely to play a waiting game.

Other rebels include Senators Naeem Hussain Chattha, SM Zafar, Jamal Ahmed Khan Leghari and Tariq Azeem.
