Emptiness on the streets of Lahore as Eid Approaches
Saturday, November 5th, 2011 8:24:47 by Ahmed BabarLahore is getting busier and busier every day as people from nearby cities and villages come to the liveliest city of the country to find better living. Lahore has always been one of the favourite cities of the country because of its rich culture.
It is said that ‘Lahore never sleeps’ and it is pretty true especially if we move to the oldest and the purest parts of the city. Choburji, Lakshmi and Gawalmandi are places where you are never behind schedule either you are looking for a late night cup
of tea, a glass of juice or any form of desi food.
Local transport moves around the city throughout the night and this is slightly different in other bigger cities including Islamabad and Karachi.
Finding job is just one of the reasons which attract people to Lahore. There are also a huge number of students who come to seek education as Lahore has some of the best teaching institutes across the country.
Universities, Colleges and even schools are full of students belonging to different local cultures. All the fortune seekers surely make the city more crowded but also forms a main part of the economic market. They are spending most of their money in Lahore
which is directly or indirectly benefitting each and every one of us living in Lahore.
It is hard to realise how many of our colleagues, schoolmates or neighbours are actually not natives of Lahore. The best time to analyse that is over the weekend and it becomes pretty clear during Eid. Everyone prefers to spend the biggest event of the year
with their families.
The Eid-al-Adha is approaching again and we can feel the impact in our surroundings. People have left the heart of Pakistan and have moved to their native homelands. All of a sudden things seem gloomy after many of our closed ones have left to celebrate
a long weekend with their families.
Life across the streets of Lahore though seems normal; people are still preparing for Eid and are busy in their lives. However, there is a part of us missing clearly and we can easily feel it. Traffic on the roads is almost half and it was probably the people
who made this city lively and as they have gone to their native homes, things are not quite the same.
