Part 4

Another thing that has become extremely common in our society is the ever-increasing influence of ‘Tayas’, ‘Chachas’ and ‘Phuppos’ (Uncles and Aunts). We tend to get negative vibes from the paternal side of our family since a very young age, something that
we find extremely confusing and the Uncles and Aunts seem so friendly. Whenever we go over to their house, they plant kisses on our cheeks, mess up our perfectly set hairdos with their hands while showing us their love, tell us that we have grown more handsome/beautiful
than before, etc. Despite all this, we always feel a weird sensation when we are around them. We are also warned by our mother to stay careful around these seemingly loving relatives of ours which pushes us into further confusion.

As we grow old, we become exposed to the real face and role of our uncles and aunts. While they pretend to be our well-wishers and shower us with prayers, they are always busy making comparisons and back-biting. They may smile when we share our recent achievement
with them, but deep inside their hearts they want nothing more than strangling us out of sheer jealousy. They may come over to our house with the excuse of socialising, but the real motive behind their visit is usually to plant seeds for a fight. They just
cannot live without interfering in our family matters or let go of an opportunity to manipulate their brother; our father.

In my cases, the uncle and aunt try to assert their dominance in our family just to make a statement that they are in control and should be feared. They try to mess up with our future by whispering in our father’s ears, they attempt to make life miserable
for our mother by creating misunderstandings, they even go to the extent of using cheap and dirty tactics to strip our family of peace and prosperity. These tactics may range from the use of false allegations on a member of our house – normally our mother
– and may include something as dangerous as black magic.

We often flaunt the strong family values that exist in our society, but we tend to forget the negative effects of these values when they start interfering with each other. It is also crucial to understand that uncles and aunts cannot be put in the same class
as one’s wife, husband and children. Priorities need to be set and a thick boundary needs to be defined that should not be crossed by either class. Uncles and aunts should be kept at a safe distance from one’s family matters because their opinion cannot be
trusted. Envy is a reality and the sooner we realise this, the sooner we’ll be able to read our relatives better and the sooner we’ll be able to put our family life onto a road of happiness and prosperity.
