Is UN successful in ‘World should be arm free’ campaign

In 2009, 100 days before the World peace day on 21 September United Nations general secretary Ban Ki Mon announced a campaign with a slogan “World must be arms free”. The concentration during this campaign was primarily put on
the retrenchment and destruction of the Nuclear Weapons. Besides this every year from 24 to 30 October, World Arms reduction day is also celebrated. The day was first started on the birthday of United Nations under the resolution of 10\2. In 1995, General
Assembly also invited NGOs to collaborate with government to make the people aware of the reports researched reports and information collected by the World organization to raise their intellect.

According to the United Nations Mass, destructive weapons are the major cause of danger to the world. These include Nuclear, biological and chemical weapons and some fatal missiles. Conventional weapons are the second most dangerous
arms for the World. Instead of ever-increasing struggles against arms, the world is still under constant threat. UN claim some successful agreements against weapons while on the other side super powers keep on experimenting the newer and fatal weapons after
regular intervals. According to some defense analysts, American weapons can destroy the whole world many times.

According to stock home international peace research institute (SIPRI), the organization to have a close eye on arms expansions, one year before the collapse of the Soviet Union In 1990, expenses on the armaments were cut short
by 100billion dollars but in 2005 it again reached to their previous amount. Economics and social experts believe that increase in defense budge always affects educational, health and social reforms programs.

SIPRI’s latest report suggest that world’s artillery operating expenses gobble up about 2.7% of global gross domestic product(GDP) in 2009. As a result, every single resident of the world get only $225. One more report predicts
25% increase in these expenses within next few years and will continue to increase under such circumstances of the world. America is on top position with $722 billion in war against terrorism in 2010. Some political experts say that there are 34 places on
the earth in warfare. In each of these nearly 1000 people consumes their lives.

Some experts believe that if such huge amount of energy is used or for the welfare and prosperity of the world, the world will become heaven. They present positive results, which will come by the use of this money. According to
SIPRI World military expenditure reached to $1.531 trillion in 2009, a 6 percent real-term increase compared to 2008 and 49 percent increase since 2009. The US is responsible for $607 billion, which accounts to 46.05% of the world’s accumulated defense budget
followed by China 6.6%, France 4.2%, England 3.8%, Russia 3.5%, Saudi Arabia 2.6%, and India consumed 2.1% on defense in 2009. During 2005 to 2009, many countries increased 7.4 to 11.4 percent of their budget for defense purposes. Some of these countries are
under developed e.g. Chad, Namibia, Gabon, and Botswana etc.

Cruise missiles, tanks and other heavy artillery are not on the second place instead small weapons like pistols, sub machine gun, mines, grenades and some light missiles hold the second position. According to United Nations, in
war times, these small weapons kill 90% of the civilians. One report reveals, in present era, every year throughout world approximately 0.3 million people are killed from small conflicts while 0.2 million from homicides and suicides. Small weapon smuggling
industry has accounted to $45 to $50billion each year. 80% of these arms trade are done by the 5 permanent members of UN Security Council (US, Russia, France, UK, China).  With every single second passed, small weapons are killing someone somewhere in the
world. 1134 organizations in 98 countries are busy in arms production one way or the other. Civilians buy 80% of fire arms produced in the world. There are estimated 639 million firearms exist in the world. 59% of which are occupied by the civilians. Small
weapons are more dangerous than the heavy one because they are easy to handle, easy to care, cheap, easily available, require less maintenance and space. According to one report, there are 500 million small weapons present in the world. It means every 12th
person has a small weapon.

More defense budget means less expenses for education, health and social development programs. America spend 44.4% of its entire budget on defense, 19.7% for health, to eradicate poverty 11.8%, for education and employment 2.2%
and 2.5% for science, energy and atmosphere. Underdevelopment countries are also participating in this race of arms. This race results in poverty, dearness, unemployment and many other severe problems in their countries. Therefore on this year’s World Peace
Week, world has to decide whether they want frightful or brilliant future.
