Miss Venezuela crowned Miss World

In a glittering event which took place in London, Miss Venezuela, Ivian Sarcos was crowned as the new Miss World 2011, beating stiff competition from Miss Philippines, Gwendoline Gaelle Sandrine Ruais (runner-up), and Miss Puerto Rico, Amanda Victoria Vilanova
Perez (third) to claim the coveted title.

The 22-year-old beauty looked stunning in her pink dress as she was crowned by reigning Miss World, Alexandria Mills of USA in a scintillating evening at the Earls Court Two.

The leading lady rose above all and impressed in all categories which included beach beauty, top model, sports, beauty with a purpose and talent.

Sarcos lost both her parents at any early age and had to spend five years in a nunnery, however after winning the title, she claimed it as the proudest moment of her life and shared a few purposeful thoughts.

"Unfortunately, I lost both my parents at a very young age, which led me to study for five years in a nunnery. I spent my five years in there and my dream was to become a nun," said the new Miss World.

"This has taught me that life, although it may be bad, doesn’t have to end badly. Although I no longer have my parents it has taught me to be stronger," Colmenares was quoted as saying, in the AFP report, "Winning means everything to me and I hope to take
advantage of being a winner in a productive manner."

"I would like to help people like me. I am an orphan. I would also like to help the elderly and troubled teenagers. As many people as I can," added the new Miss World.

Sarcos has 12 siblings and dreamt of becoming a nun herself. However, she wanted to pursue fame, which was associated with modeling. She also holds a degree in Human Resources and works for a broadcasting company. Her hobbies include volleyball, mountaineering
and trekking.

Despite the event watched by over a billion viewers, there was a large protest outside the Earl Court where demonstrators labelled it an appalling offense against women’s equality.

The next Miss World contest will be held in China, Monglia.
