Ultra-Slim notebooks in a battle: Macbook Air vs. Zenbook UX31
Thursday, November 10th, 2011 8:28:39 by Usman KhalidThere are two ultra-slim laptops in the market and they are no doubts that both are in a neck-and-neck competition with each other. This is, without a single hint of doubt, about Asus’ Zenbook UX31 and Apple’s Macbook Air.
Apple being the pioneer of such market, is in the driving seat with cutting-edge technology and better performance but with a cheap price in the top shelf and close-to-perfection performance, the new Zenbook is not far from the grid.
The two are beating each other in different aspects but users are still in a frizzle to whether go for the eaten apple logo on the lid or the word ASUS embossed in chrome.
As far as the design is concerned, Apple, as usual, with sleek and simple style is a looker. On the other hand, Zenbook, although not far behind in better dimensions, still looks more, like an ASUS version of Macbook Air. In addition, Asus machine is a heavier
notebook.
The Air is a winner in track pad technology with more user friendly gestures but Zenbook is not far behind in the race.
With high resolution on a full HD LED screen, Zenbook beats the daylights out of Macbook. In addition to higher resolution, the UX31 has a bigger colour palette to support the advanced GPU nested in the motherboard.
Both devices have no moving parts whatsoever and cancel each other out in that aspect of technology but it’s something the users won’t sweat on.
The Macbook goes shoulder-to-shoulder with the entry-level Macbook Pro and is very efficient for low-end graphics works and other application that only need a higher processor. On the other hand Asus is a normal machine in a thin chassis.
The Zenbook is a killer in possessing every port available in the world from USB 3.0 to mini-HDMi to a multi-purpose Ethernet cable included in the box. On the other hand, the Air only houses an Apple backed thunderbolt I/O and an old school USB 2.0.
The Macbook Air clean sweeps the Asus machine in battery life. Apple’s notebook offers a 7-hour battery life and is even better on stand-by whereas, the Zenbook offers only 5 hours of working on DC charge and there is not much difference on stand-by.
Overall the Macbook Air is a winner in performance and dimensions but UX31’s (13-inch screen) low price at $1099 as compared Air’s $1288 (with the same screen size) lures the customers to Asus Stores.
