The Fantastic Five: Top cell phone service providers in Pakistan

Pakistan is a developing country facing so many hurdles through its way. There are few areas where our nation has progressed at a very fast speed and cell phone industry is one of them.

Cell phone networks in Pakistan are very advance and it is only because of the vast subscriber base that new companies are coming in every day.

Currently operating mobile networks in Pakistan includes Mobilink which works under the GSM technology with 900/1800 bandwidth. The company is planning to upgrade the network to UMTS 3G/HSPA 3.5G. Mobilink is a subsidiary of Orascom Telecom and the company
claims to have 30.75 million active customers across country.

UMTS is the Universal Mobile Telecommunications System and is the third generation technology that is used in the GSM based standards. UMTS has several benefits including the fast data transfer rate as it allows up to 45Mbit/S.

Mobilink has also launched its sub network named Mobilink Infinity which is currently operating only in Karachi and has over twenty thousand customers at the moment. Mobilink Infinity is only available for billing customers as it operates at the WiMax 802.16e
based network technology.

Warid is the second largest mobile provider operating across the country with a total subscriber base of 20.10 million. Warid is a project of Abu Dhabi Group and Singtel; it uses the same frequency of 900/1800 since its launch. The company is currently providing
both post-paid and prepaid services to its customers.

Third largest cellular company in Pakistan is Telenor which is currently operating at the GSM 900/1800 frequency network technology. Company has plans to upgrade their network to UMTS 3G/HSPA in the near future.

Telenor claims to have 20.0 million customers across the nation.  The company is considered as one of the leading mobile service provider across Europe. Telenor is currently operating in five Asian countries including Pakistan, Bangladesh, Thailand, India
and Malaysia.

U-fone is the oldest mobile company in Pakistan and is currently at fourth position with a total number of19.7 million customer throughout the country. Company operates at the 900/1800 network technology and there is no information regarding their upgrade
in the near future. U-fone is a joint project of Emirates Telecommunications Corporation and Pakistan Telecommunication Company Ltd.

Zong has the fifth largest subscriber based in Pakistan with a total number of 6.1 million customers nationwide. Zong is owned by China Mobile and the company launched on the AMPS based network as it upgraded towards the 900/1800 network technology.

Rise of mobile companies in Pakistan is certainly on the up one can easily judge the progress of the industry by checking the stats of the five top mobile network providers mentioned above. Other companies operating in Pakistan include SCO (Special Communication
Organisation only available in Azad Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan), World Call, TeleCard, Vfone, Wateen, Wi-Tribe and Qubee.
