A Date with Time: Significance of August 14th 2002
Saturday, November 12th, 2011 7:50:43 by Ahmed BabarWe have witnessed a lot of changes over the past few years, some of the changes are positive and some negative. It was the day when two passenger airplanes hit the World Trade Center in America that changed everything for a lot of people.
Thousands of people were killed during the attacks on the World Trade Centre and many more in pursuit of the master mind that allegedly planned the attacks. There are a lot of different theories behind the incident. America believes that the attacks were
imposed by Afghanistan but somehow Pakistan was dragged into the scene.
Since the attacks the whole picture has changed in Pakistan, there has been a number of suicide bombing attacks in different cities of our country. Sense of insecurity is the biggest gift that we have inherited since the United States attacks.
The situation has changed a lot of things for our people. One big change that we experience today is the rise of media. Pakistan Television (PTV) was the only news channel and it was doing a perfect job until we see a new comer starting its test transmission
on 14th August 2002.
Yes you are right, ‘Geo’ was the first private news channel who created a trend and has a lot of followers in the span of ten years. Today we have roughly around 20 news channels spreading the depression all over our bedrooms and living rooms.
The credit goes to Geo without a doubt as the intention was right, who would have expected that the demand for depression will reach such a height. Having 20 news channels is probably not that big of an issue for some but the worst part is when you really
have to hunt for the entertainment channels.
First of all the news channels almost have the same frequency and one has to really take his time to search for any entertainment programmes. Secondly, there are not enough entertainment channels any ways. Excess of negative and depressive news is certainly
playing its part on the minds and hearts of our people.
It is believed that even if a brilliant kid at school is told every day that he is the worst kid in the class, there will be a time when he will actually become one.
Pakistan and its people certainly need to get their minds off the conflicts of all types. What we need is the entertainment channels to cheer us up after a long day at work and not some news channel making news out of absolutely nothing at times.
