One of the most talented Pakistani fast bowlers, Muhammmad Amir has been granted permission from the London Court to make an appeal against his six month jail sentence for being involved in spot-fixing scam.
Amir, who was recently announced a jail term from the Court, demanded bail, which was refused by the judge. He was punished for being involved in spot-fixing scandals alongside his team-mates, Salman Butt and Muhammad Asif.
The Court directed Amir to pay £8,120 for bowling prearranged no-balls during the test match of Pakistan vs. England at Lord’s stadium in August 2010.
Butt, who was leading the Pakistan cricket team at that time, faced a 30 month sentence and a fine of $30,937 while Asif was announced a sentence of one year and a penalty of £9389.
The Court had ordered that all three cricketers will serve half of their sentences and then will be released on license with certain conditions, which if breached, will send the respective cricketer back to jail, where he would serve the remainder of his
jail-term.
Moreover, Justice Kathryn Thirlwall stressed that the appeal against jail should be filed before November 29.
The 19-year-old Amir has been raising his voice against the inadequate guidance of Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) over the consequences of being involved in illegal activities during the international cricket.
“The PCB never told me just how serious a offence it was to get into these sort of things. They didn’t educate me enough about anti-corruption laws,” said Amir.
Previously, Butt has revealed his hopes of appealing against the 30 month jail sentence, announced to him by London’s Southwark Crown Court.
The news of Butt lodging an appeal against his sentence was confirmed by his lawyer, Yasin Patel. “I can confirm that Butt has lodged an appeal against the sentence,” he told. “We lodged it this week.”
Furthermore, it is likely that the hearing of both compatriots will be heard jointly, only if Butt is also given permission to appeal.
