The Pakistan Red Crescent Society on Saturday announced a winter relief plan of over 0.5 million for the people of flood-hit areas of Sindh, according a press release. The plan includes provision of food, healthcare, blankets and clean drinking water to
the flood survivors in various districts of Sindh.
The winter plan was announced after the chairperson of Pakistan Red Crescent Society Sherry Rehman visited some of the flood affected areas on Saturday, November 12. According to the press release, the aim of Sherry Rehman – who also happens to be Minister
National Assembly (MNA) in the sitting government – behind visiting these areas was to gather first-hand information about the problems of the flood survivors, particularly in the upcoming winter season so that the PRCS could gear up efforts to provide maximum
help.
Rehman, the former information minister of Pakistan, said that the government and the aid agencies have done a lot for the flood sufferers but still thousands of people are living in temporary shelters. She further added that the temporary shelter, hemmed
in by the floodwater, have turned into breeding grounds for water-borne diseases.
Currently 38 PRCS teams are working in the flood affected districts of Southern Pakistan. Besides these PRCS teams, there six National Disaster Response Trained teams and one Regional Disaster Response Trained Team working in these areas and more than 200
PRCS trained volunteers are supporting these teams.
She said that that the slow response from international community has put thousands of lives at risk. The PRCS chairperson urged that it’s high time to make a combined effort to rehabilitate these people as soon as possible.
She appealed to both the national as well as international donor communities to come forward and join the government of Pakistan in helping the flood survivors rehabilitate in the shortest time possible.
Pakistan had faced devastating flood disaster last year as well but Rehman said that this year’s floods are worse than last year’s as most of the flood sufferers have been forced to leave their homes for the second consecutive years.
